Passenger car registrations in the European Union fell by 3.4% year-on-year to 853,670 units in February 2025, following a 2.6% drop in the prior month. Germany led the decline, shrinking by 6.4%, followed by Italy (-6.2%). In the battery electric vehicles (BEVs) segment, car registrations surged by 23.7% to 131,275 units, with their market share standing at 15.4%, driven by significant increases in registrations in Belgium (38.9%), Germany (30.8%), and the Netherlands (22.4%). For the first two months of the year, car registrations dropped by 3% compared to the same period in 2024, with declines in Italy (-6%), Germany (-4.6%), and France (-3.3%). During this period, new battery-electric car sales grew by 28.4%, reaching 255,489 units and capturing 15.2% of the total EU market share. Three of the four largest markets in the EU, accounting for 64% of all battery-electric car registrations, saw double-digit growth, with Germany (41%), Belgium (38%), and the Netherlands (25%).
