European stocks fell into the red on Monday, with the STOXX 50 down 0.7% and the STOXX 600 losing 0.4%, following a lacklustre opening after both indexes closed at record highs on Friday. Markets were rattled by the resignation of French Prime Minister Lecornu, just weeks after taking office and a day after President Macron unveiled a new government. Meanwhile, in the Czech Republic, right-wing populist Andrej Babis won the parliamentary elections, and in Japan, Sanae Takaichi was effectively confirmed as the country’s next premier, fueling expectations of renewed fiscal stimulus and continued loose monetary policy. French equities were among the session’s worst performers, with LVMH (-2%), Hermès (-1.6%), L’Oréal (-1.5%), AXA (-3.5%), BNP Paribas (-5.2%), and Vinci (-3.2%) posting steep losses. On the other hand, technology and energy stocks helped limit broader declines. ASML Holding rose 1.4%, while BP gained 1.2%, Glencore advanced 0.9%, and Thyssenkrupp booked solid gains of 2.6%.
