On the economic front, April housing starts jumped 30% to 278,606 units from March’s 214,205, signalling a renewed upswing in residential construction, even as March manufacturing sales dipped 1.4%, dragged lower by the primary metals and petroleum-and-coal-products industries.

Canadian Dollar middles as Loonie flows get pulled in both directions.The Canadian Dollar (CAD) went nowhere fast on Thursday, with the Loonie struggling to find momentum on either side. The US Dollar (USD) was softly lower on the day, however another decline in intraday Crude Oil prices pulled the support rug out from underneath the CAD, keeping the USD/CAD major pair strung along a familiar congestion level just south of 1.4000.

Manufacturing sales in Canada declined by 1.4% month-over-month to CAD 71.9 billion in March 2025, less than preliminary estimates of a 1.9% drop. This marked the second consecutive monthly decline. Sales decreased in thirteen of twenty-one industries, led by notable drops in primary metal products (-6.5%) and petroleum and coal products (-4.2%). In contrast, sales of furniture and related products rose by 11.9%. Regionally, eight provinces recorded declines, with Ontario (-1.0%) and Quebec (-1.6%) experiencing the largest setbacks. On a yearly basis, national manufacturing sales rose 1.9%.
