The total value of building permits rose by 11.0% month-over-month to $13.1 billion in December 2024, way above market expectations of a 1.7% rise, following an 5.6% decrease in the previous month. Residential permits were up by 21.2% to $9.0 billion, led by an increase in multiple-unit (33.3%) to $6.1 billion and single-unit (1.8%) to $2.9 billion. Meanwhile, non-residential sector permits fell by 5.9% to $4.2 billion, primarily due to significant decreases in the commercial (-10.9%) and institutional (-11.2%) components, which more than offset a 13.9% increase in the industrial sector. In contrast, the industrial component registered an increase of 13.9%.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed 0.9% to close at 25,658 on Monday, driven by gains in commodity producers. Key mining stocks, including Agnico Eagle, Wheaton Precious, Barrick Gold, and Franco-Nevada, rose between 1.6% and 2.5%, supported by higher bullion prices as safe-haven demand grew following President Trump’s announcement of new global steel and aluminum tariffs and plans for reciprocal tariffs by midweek, escalating trade war fears. Energy producers Canadian Natural, Suncor, Imperial Oil, and Cenovus also outperformed, rising between 1.2% and 2.8% amid higher oil prices. Meanwhile, TD Bank led gains with a 3.9% surge after selling its US$15 billion stake in Charles Schwab, a move expected to free up at least $20 billion for a major share buyback and balance sheet strengthening following U.S. regulatory sanctions. Shopify jumped 2.3% ahead of its fourth-quarter earnings report due tomorrow.
