The S&P/ASX 200 dropped nearly 1% to around 8,660 on Friday, extending losses from the prior session, and heading for a second weekly decline, as US tariff uncertainty intensified after President Trump revised “reciprocal” duties on several countries, raising rates to 10–41%. Countries not listed will face an automatic 10% levy, while transshipped goods will be hit with an extra 40%, set to take effect seven days after the order. Meanwhile, Australia avoided steeper tariffs, with its rate held at 10%, despite earlier threats of a hike to 15–20%. The White House cited progress in trade and security talks as the reason, noting Australia is among countries nearing agreements with the US. However, Australia was not immune to the broader risk-off sentiment driving the ASX lower. Among top decliners were healthcare stocks, led by biotech giant CSL (-1.7%). Financials also dropped 1.3%, with the Big Four banks down over 1.5%. Markets now await the upcoming quarterly PPI reports later today.
