The S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.2% to around 8,545 in early trading Friday, extending losses from the previous session, as investors weighed escalating geopolitical tensions and renewed tariff risks. Rising tensions between Israel and Iran pushed commodity prices higher, after Israel launched a preemptive strike and declared a nationwide state of emergency. However, broader sentiment was capped by renewed trade concerns, after US President Donald Trump said he would soon send formal letters to major trading partners outlining potential unilateral tariffs aimed at securing new trade deals. On the corporate front, Chinese export-reliant miners plunged, such as BHP Group (-1.5%) and Rio Tinto (-1.7%), as trade tensions disrupted the minerals supply chain. On the upside, top performers were gold miners and energy firms, which climbed between 4% and 7% following a spike in oil and bullion prices.
