The S&P Global Flash Australia Manufacturing PMI slipped to a two-month low of 51.7 in April, down from 52.1 in March. Manufacturing output continued to expand, the pace of new orders rose only modestly. Growth in new business was driven largely by domestic demand, as new export orders contracted for a second straight month amid tariff-related uncertainties. Business confidence weakened further, with optimism falling to its lowest level since last October. Backlogs of work increased for a second month, as both manufacturing and services firms reported rising volumes of outstanding business, with supply delays contributing to the first rise in manufacturing backlogs in over two years. To manage workloads, firms continued hiring at a steady pace, maintaining job growth momentum that began at the start of the year. Input cost pressures remained elevated due to higher material, energy, and labor expenses, with a weaker currency further inflating costs, particularly for goods producers.
