The S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.4% to around 8,920 on early Wednesday trade, marking its third consecutive session of losses, driven by declines from tech and gold stocks. A weak lead on Wall Street also dragged the index, as investors weighed the prolonged US government shutdown and renewed doubts over the durability of the AI-driven rally. Meanwhile, markets assessed the World Bank’s decision to raise its growth forecast for parts of East Asia and the Pacific, after a summer marked by US tariff-related uncertainty that weighed on global sentiment. On the corporate front, tech shares dropped 1.5% to a one-month low, tracking their US peers lower. The sub-index extended losses for a third straight session, with sector constituents Life360 Inc falling 4.4% and WiseTech Global slipping 1%. Additionally, gold miners lagged, down 2.1%, as investors seem to take profits. Sector leaders Newmont and Northern Star slid 1.1% and 1.7%, respectively. Financials also fell, led by top lender NAB (-0.5%).
