That was the grade that Wang Qishan deserved for his entertaining comments this week at an event organized by the Asia Society of Southern California. About a hundred of us Pac-Rim-trekkies jammed into the overheated dining room of the Los Angeles Athletic Club for an hour-long glimpse of the head of one of our most important and kaleidoscopic cities. Wang arrived with a reputation as anything but a dour communist functionary, billed as an almost hip prototype of the pragmatic new Chinese leader. From that perspective, the mayor lived up to expectations. Of middle height and compact bearing, he is a fast-talking, happy-quipping, relatively down to earth kind of guy. At the podium, he was a one-man Chinese charm offensive. With the Olympics coming to Beijing in 2008, this is exactly what China needs from the mayor of the host city: The Olympics is not just another international conference. The city's infrastructure, tolerance and management skills will be tested like nothing since June 1989, when a huge crowd in Tiananmen Square exploded onto the history books in an unforgettable splurge of bloodshed. A ready sense of mayoral humor could go a long way to paving over bumpy spots. Wang was anything but a stiff shirt. "No matter what I do," he laughed, answering a question about the mechanisms of public feedback in a society some Western scholars describe as totalitarian, "it is never enough." The salesman from Beijing then in good humor recounted the sit-ins around his outer office, the many times his official car is ambushed by citizen complainers taking advantage of Beijing's snail-like traffic to make their views known. He reflected the current line to the letter, of course. China, he said, must be ruled by law if progress is to proceed apace. It must narrow the gap between the rich (mainly in the cities) and the dirt poor (mainly in the countryside) to achieve a just society. "China must have peaceful development," he said, over and over, maybe one too many times for total comfort. But economic development is not everything, he added, as it resolutely had been under the prior national government: China must now start "putting people first." But just as he was waxing eloquent on the need to humanize China, his translator — a thin, elegant, middle-aged lady stationed to his left who had been struggling in the heated dining room to keep up with Mayor Jokester — suddenly lost her breath and found her eyes bolted upwards, as if in shock. Then she became completely unbalanced and collapsed forward on her face. Her crashing body landed not more than a foot from where I was sitting. The crowd gasped, cries of "someone call 911" rang out, and I was able to do something I have always wanted to do my entire life: I yelled out, "Is there a doctor in the house?" In fact, there were several, and after a tense patch in which we all feared the woman might have suffered a stroke or some-such, the docs were able to revive her and escort her to a quiet, cooler room for regrouping. As it turned out, she had been much jet-lagged, utterly unfed all day, drained from following like a coolie the peripatetic Beijing joking mayor on his appointed rounds while translating his many monologues, and, finally, became completely overcome in downtown Los Angeles in the midst of a June heat wave. But the show must go on (I guess): After Donald Tang, an Asia Society bigwig, jumped on the stage to serve as substitute translator for the fallen lady, Mayor Wang proceeded as if nothing had happened. It was odd. One imagined Bill Clinton at the dais, dramatically stepping down to follow the stricken translator into the recovery room, to feel her pain, before continuing. But this mayor, perhaps like China itself, is stopping for no one. Needless to say, we were all relieved and happy for the elegant lady translator when word reached the table that she would be fine. But one had to wonder about China's new mantra of "putting people first" if the mayor himself wouldn't even slow down for his own translator. It could be that China is now moving forward so fast that it cannot slow down for anybody, even if it wanted to. All I know is that, if I were a citizen of China, I'd be afraid to fall. I don't think anyone would bother to stop very long for me. 北京市长王岐山洛杉矶演讲累倒翻译乐翻听众 2006年06月02日 16:08:03 　来源：中新网 北京市长登上洛杉矶运动俱乐部的讲台 北京市长王岐山今天在访美午餐会即兴演讲中，坦诚相告他的重重困难与解决毅力，结果累倒了翻译，乐翻听众。 王岐山作为中国首都的父母官应美国亚洲协会特邀，登上洛杉矶运动俱乐部的讲台，原本是要向各界人士主讲北京奥运会建设以人为本、发展和谐社会，一看人人握有讲稿，干脆即兴话说心事。 “我与洛杉矶有缘!十天前接受了《洛杉矶时报》的专访，几天前又出席南加大校董会包下天安门城楼举办的酒会。我被问的都是楼房价格、交通堵车、环境保护等问题，都是本市长最发愁的心病。” 王岐山举例：“北京有二百六十多万辆车，近期石油涨价，每天还增加九百九十五辆。”他笑称北京人的生活变化好象在学洛杉矶，也可能是好萊坞电影看多了。 这位世界大都市的市长列举收入分配、城乡差别、行业差距和区域差别等等问题，比喻他面临的诸多困难，“不比一位天天说自己有毛病的人更痛苦。” 但他说：“看一个城市要看状态。北京的事实是：不很好也不太糟。可是我们一直在到处学习别人，研究如何解决问题，改革开放三十年来一直如此。” 王岐山实话告诉听众：“北京经济两位数的增长率虽已二十多年，但今天的人均收入才相当于美国一九七四年的水平。”他话题又一转道：“如此改革发展，怎么会威胁世界？!”。 昔日下乡当过农民的王岐山，握拳表达他屡战屡败，又屡败屡战的勇气时，一旁紧张倾听的年轻女翻译探身了解一个单词时，一刹那从台阶上摔倒在地。 只听随着人们“啊!”的一声惊呼，市长和嘉宾们都飞快围上前救护。 主讲市长目送女翻译在全场的鼓掌声中慢慢被扶向楼外呼啸而来的救护车......他又上台感叹道：“给我当翻译太难了!”结果由出任亚洲协会会长的华裔美籍企业家唐伟上台客串翻译，旁边还站着驻洛杉矶总领事钟建华协助。 最后，一位美国听众举手表明他将到北京去工作。王市长笑答：“很高兴你成为我们的纳税人，我将为你服务!”全场皆是欢笑掌声。(记者 贾国荣)

一止军队不会因为一个士兵的倒下就停止前进。 一个部族不会因为一个女人的停止生育而都陪着不生。 一个家庭不会因为一个孩子的夭折而悲痛一生。 既然是外汇论坛： 一个成功的交易员不会因为一笔单子的浮亏而停下手上所有的交易。 ---------- 从理智的角度看问题；首先那个市长并没有换上一颗螺丝钉，继续前进，而是让该休息的去休息，该工作的仍旧工作，有什么问题，工作完了再说，市长的关心无益于病人的病情好转。 其次，相信我，若是那个市长真的放下工作去照顾他的女翻译，我们的友邦记者们又会生产一篇从另一个角度含讥带讽的文章。 治理一个国家的人，就应该从国家的整体利益看问题；治理一个城市的人，就应该从城市的角度去看问题；把角度搞错了，只会“看起来很美”。
