--Initial Claims Fall 7,000 to 298,000 --Survey Week Comparison Shows Cont. Claims +73K from June 17 Week --Decline in Auto Industry Layoffs Over Past Two Weeks - Labor
By Chris Middleton
WASHINGTON (MNI) - Initial claims for U.S. state unemployment dipped 7, 000 to 298,000 in the July 22 week, falling below the 300,000 level for the first time since early June, as the annual auto retooling shutdowns continued to work their way out of the figures, the Labor Department reported Thursday morning.
Initial claims came in well below the median estimate in a Market News International survey, which had centered on 310,000. Forecasts had ranged between 300,000 and 315,000.
A Labor Department analyst cited "no special factors" in this week s data, while noting that there has been a decrease in auto industry layoffs normally associated with the summer retooling season for the past two weeks. But asked about the impact on the data, the analyst said auto layoffs were "not a factor."
The Labor Department noted that seasonal factors had expected initial unadjusted claims to decline by 22% or about 83,000 in the July 22 week and claims fell 23.7% or 89,903 to 287,747. There were 295,026 unadjusted claims in the comparable week a year ago.
The four-week moving average for initial claims in the July 22 week, fell 4,250 to 312,750.
Initial claims in the July 15 week were revised to 305,000 from the previously reported 304,000 level. They are now down 29,000 from the previous week.
Meanwhile, continuing claims fell 23,000 to 2.475 million in the July 15 week.
A survey week comparison shows continuing initial claims were up 73,000 from their June 17 week level of 2.402 million.
Unadjusted continuing claims declined 8,103 to 2.510 million, but were below the 2.635 million level in the comparable week in 2005. The four-week moving average rose 18,250 to 2.460 million in the July 15 week.
The seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate held steady at 1.9% in the July 15 week, down from 2.0% a year earlier.
The unemployment rate among the insured labor force is roughly half that reported monthly by the Labor Department because claims are approved for the most part only for job losers, not the job leavers and labor force reentrants included in the monthly report.
