Executive Summary EUR/USD: Neutral/bearish The dollar has been ignoring the economic releases for most of August and technical factors have dominated. The US currency nevertheless still retains a positive outlook, based on robust economic data and expectations of further Fed tightening. After a soft spell in early month, the greenback did pick up last week, and should continue to do so. EUR/USD thus retains a bearish short-term outlook. The next supports lie at 1.2105 and then at the 1.1955-65 area. EUR/JPY: Neutral/bearish EUR/JPY has followed a clear bearish trend since early August, driven by a strong yen and then by as softer euro as EUR/USD resumed a downtrend last week. The yen might pause in the short-term and ahead of the Japanese general elections of September 12. But a confirmation of the resumption of the downtrend of EUR/USD will nevertheless maintain a bearish outlook for EUR/JPY. Next support at 133.55-75 and then the lows of last June at 130.60. GBP/USD: Neutral The recent strength of sterling - linked to the BoE’s decision not to fuel further immediate rate cut expectations – should soften in the short- term. The renewed vigour of the US dollar should thus be instrumental driving cable below the lower end of the 1.78-1.82 range before heading towards the July lows at 1.7300. However, for the time being the latter level looks ambitious.
