The ECB kept interest rates unchanged today but the hawkish rhetoric adopted by its president at the post-verdict news conference shortened the odds of rate hike in the coming months. 'While we expect the ECB to remain at the sidelines in the coming months, the clear possibility of generous settlements in the current German pay round means the near term risk is skewed toward higher rather than lower euro zone policy rates,' said Richard McGuire at RBC. Indeed, Trichet's comments appeared to a warning to wage negotiators to maintain discipline. 'The Bank is clearly at increasing pains to communicate the fact that its tolerance for generous wage settlements is low,' McGuire.
